[ARCHIVED] Sewer System Smoke Testing

Concord Public Works Water/Sewer Division has contracted with Flow Assessments, LLC to begin smoke testing of select portions of the sewer system starting on Tuesday, November 12, 2019 which will continue for several weeks. Properties abutting the smoke testing activities will receive notification, via door hanger, approx. 48-72 hours in advance of the testing.

Smoke testing is a cost effective method used to identify sources of stormwater inflow & infiltration (I/I) that can find its way into the municipal sewer system. The actual work involves the introduction of a white, non-toxic smoke that is blown into sewer manholes and will vent out of holes in nearby manholes, cracks within nearby sewer pipes (mains and laterals), private sewer vent pipes and illicit stormwater connections (both in the public way and on private property).

I/I in the sewer system results in an overall reduction in sewer capacity and increased operating costs for wastewater treatment making the identification and removal of I/I sources vital to maintain, or increase available sewer capacity and to minimize unnecessary treatment costs.
