[ARCHIVED] Closing of Outdoor Public Space in Concord Due to EEE Threat 6pm to 6am

The threat of Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE) has been in the news and, as many people are aware, its presence is increasing throughout Massachusetts and our neighboring communities. In order to ensure the safety of our community members, the Town of Concord is taking precautionary measures to help citizens avoid unnecessary contact with mosquitoes in public outdoor facilities.

Out of an abundance of caution, the Town is following the guidance of Massachusetts Department of Public Health (MDPH) and will be closing public parks, playing fields, and all other outdoor recreation areas from 6:00PM to 6:00AM. These closures begin today, September 9, 2019 and will remain in effect until further notice.

Town Officials are advising private organizations to consider cancelling any outdoor evening activities and encourage everyone to remain vigilant when it comes to the spread of Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE).

The MDPH recommends that people should limit their exposure to the outdoors when possible and practical, and to wear protective and covering clothing as well as insect repellent which contains DEET if being outside is necessary.

Information about EEE and ways to avoid insect borne diseases, specifically EEE, can be found on the MA Department of Public Health website pages at https://www.mass.gov/guides/eee-in-massachusetts.

The official press release can be found here.
