This weekend’s series of high engagement events for visitors and locals alike seeks to honor the legacy of Concord native son, George, Washington Dugan on the 160th Anniversary and his heroic sacrifice as a member of the Massachusetts, 54th the first all-black regiment of the Civil War. This weekend ties together events of the American Revolution, and those of the War of the Rebellion, and shows how the concept of freedom, the seeking of freedom, and the winning of freedom is a task of many generations and it is yet unfinished. This opportunity allows for public visibility and exposure to learn about and honor a history that may be new to them but is essential for them and their understanding of Concord’s role in securing freedom for all people.
The weekend kicks off on Thursday, July 13 with a lecture and discussion with historian Marvin Alonso Greer at the Goodwin Forum at the Main Library on the Massachusetts 54th regiment and follows with a showing of the award-winning film GLORY at the Umbrella Theater on Friday night. The weekend continues with museum exhibits, living history demonstrations, and a ceremony at Monument Square followed by a march to Sleepy Hollow Cemetery. All events are FREE and open to the public.
