Current Issues at the Nuclear Metals, Inc. (NMI)/Starmet Superfund Site at 2229 Main Street
Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Record of Decision
EPA has concluded a 15-year effort to characterize the risk and select a remediation strategy for the Superfund (hazardous waste) site located at 2229 Main Street in Concord, Massachusetts (formerly NMI/Starmet). Site contaminants include depleted uranium, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB), chlorinated solvents, and 1,4-dioxane. View the for the most up to date overview of remediation on site. Learn more and view the 2015 EPA Record of Decision (PDF). The latest news about the cleanup can be found on the NMI/Starmet Superfund site.
The buildings at 2229 Main Street have been cleaned out in anticipation of removing them in the next few months. The EPA plan for the building removal can be found online. Demolition will only occur during regular working hours on weekdays when the weather conditions are suitable. The Concord Fire Department is working closely with the contractor to ensure that all work is done safely. There is 24-hour security at the site and all hazardous areas are surrounded by fences and marked. View the Concord Board of Health comments to the EPA, dated April 24, 2014.
In 2015, Concord Town Meeting passed an article that authorized the Select Board to acquire the property at 2229 Main Street once EPA publishes a Record of Decision that specifies that the site be re mediated to a level that is safe for residential uses. EPA Record of Decision published on September 30, 2015 does specify a remediation goal that is consistent with residential uses.
