Mission

Founded in 1960 by a Special Act of Legislature, the Historic Districts Commission has jurisdiction over projects large and small within the six Historic Districts of Concord

"The purpose of this [Historic Districts] Act is to promote the educational, cultural, economic and general welfare of the public through the preservation and protection of buildings, places and districts of historic or literary significance through the development and maintenance of appropriate settings for said buildings, places and districts and through the maintenance of said buildings, places and districts as sites and landmarks compatible with the literary and historic tradition of Concord."

  • 7 p.m.
  • Generally the 1st & 3rd Thursday of the month (unless otherwise noted)

Historic Districts Commission Charge


The Historic Districts Commission is charged with determining the appropriateness of exterior architectural features of buildings and structures to be erected within the historic districts wherever such features are subject to view from a public street, way or place; the appropriateness of changes in exterior color features of buildings and structures within the historic districts wherever such features are subject to view from a public street, way or place; the demolition or removal of any building or structure within the historic districts; the appropriateness of the erection or display of occupational, commercial or other signs and billboards within the historic districts.

The Secretary of the Interior's Standards, in particular the Standards for Rehabilitation, are intended as general guidance for work on all historic properties, are widely used, and have been adopted at the Federal, State and local levels.
